Hart's Turkey Farm

Hart's Today

Hart’s point of view has always been, “If you want it done right, do it yourself,” so practically everything is made right here on the premises, including relishes, salad dressings, fresh whipped potatoes, gravies, soups and chowders (made from simmered rich stocks), delicious pies, dinner rolls, puddings, and other tasty delights such as Hart’s premium ice cream. Our tender roasted turkeys are expertly prepared so you may enjoy our famous turkey dinners. All our meals are prepared with the same painstaking care with which the best cooks prepare food for their own families and guests.

Hart's Today

On a busy day, we serve more than one ton of turkey, 40 gallons of gravy, 1,000 pounds of fresh potatoes, 4,000 dinner rolls, and more than 100 pies.

Approaching 60 Years of Making Memories

People today still remember what it was like to come down the hill and hear the turkeys gobbling behind Hart’s Turkey Farm Restaurant. Those are among the many memories that have been built around the operation over the past five-plus decades.

It was in the late 1940s that brothers Russ and Larry Hart and their wives left New Jersey to begin farming in New Hampshire.Hart's 1954Helen and Gerda helped their husbands grow vegetables and apples. In addition, the two couples sold chickens, eggs, and turkeys from a delivery truck.

In 1953, they raised turkeys exclusively and, in 1954, they opened a 12-seat restaurant specializing in delicious turkey sandwiches and dinners. “Quality, service, and home-style cooking” have always been the restaurant’s motto and highest priority.

Russ became the sole owner when his brother Larry passed away in 1960.Hart's 1957In 1965, he phased out raising his own turkeys, discovering that he could equal the quality of the home-grown birds by selectively purchasing them from turkey farms that met his standards of quality. That step allowed him more time to perfect his skills as a chef and restauranteur.

During the past two generations, ever-growing numbers of satisfied customers have encouraged the family to expand the restaurant’s size many times, and it now seats nearly 500 people. The kitchen and storage areas have been extensively renovated to create one of the most spacious, modern, and efficient kitchens in New England.

The Catering Service also has grown, to the extent that it can serve thousands of people at one event.Hart's 1960Hart’s Catering Service will travel throughout Northern New England to serve delicious food at the locations people choose.

The Gift Shop in the lobby, which was added in 1988, is one of the few remaining souvenir shops around, and people enjoy the link to the past that it offers, as well as the opportunity to purchase Hart’s products.

Hart's 1965

The restaurant has been a family endeavor from the start. Russ’s mother, Grandma Mae, started what may the world’s largest plate collection which visitors can see displayed on the walls of the dining rooms.

In 1986, Russ and Helen’s children, Lynn, Dale, Russell T., and Glenn, purchased the restaurant and continued their active involvement in its daily operations. In February 1998, we lost Glenn suddenly. Our friends and the community came together to support our family in another passing, as was the case when we lost Larry in 1960, Grandma Mae in 1980, Marilyn, (Larry & Russ Sr.’s sister) in 1994, and Russ Sr. in 1995. We are also supported by a hard-working staff as well as the third-generation Hart children who share our commitment to high-quality food and good service.
